Learner Participation in Inclusive Education: Background Paper

blue cover page
The Learner Participation in Inclusive Education (LPIE) activity focuses on gathering and using meaningful qualitative data on learners’ socio-emotional participation in inclusive education.

This background paper provides information on the topic of participation in relation to the LPIE activity. It reviews and elaborates on publications on learner participation in inclusive education to address two essential questions:

How does the literature define participation?
Which dimensions of participation can be identified in the literature?
In doing so, the paper offers an understanding of the term ‘participation’. This leads to a model of learner participation that breaks the concept of participation down into its individual components. This model, and the paper’s findings, will be used for further work in the LPIE activity.
